There are a few watches that seem to sit in a category of their own. The Omega Speedmaster is one of them.
It’s not just the “Moonwatch” story. It’s the way the design quietly evolved over decades — small dial changes, logo swaps, case updates. Apparently each of those small details is basically a timestamp, if you know what you’re looking at. I didn’t, going in — I only found this out because I kept seeing the same terms pop up (“printed logo,” “applied logo,” Cal. 861 vs 1861) across different listings and got curious enough to actually dig into what they meant.
So this is really just me organizing what I learned into something I can glance at next time. I’m nowhere near confident enough to call it a definitive guide — if you know this stuff better than I do, I’d genuinely like to hear where I’ve got it wrong.

Take this as a rough sanity check, not a verdict — I’m still testing it against real listings myself. But it’s the kind of thing I wish I’d had when I was:
- Browsing listings and trying to get a gut feel for whether the details lined up
- Inspecting a watch in person and not knowing what to even look for
- Trying to spot a Franken-watch or a misdescribed piece before getting too attached
One thing that surprised me: the dial only gets you so close, but apparently the movement is the real tell — a 3861 movement supposedly means you’re in modern territory no matter what the dial looks like. And I genuinely didn’t expect the bracelet to matter as much as it seems to.
The bit that’s stuck with me most is the overlap period — a printed logo paired with a later case, or a late 1861 right before the switch to 3861. Those in-between watches feel like catching Omega mid-decision, somewhere between “tool watch” and “luxury instrument.” I don’t fully understand the whole timeline yet, but that transition zone is the part I keep wanting to read more about.
Why It Went to the Moon (a fun detour I fell into while researching)
This is the part that made me stop and go “wait, really?” while I was reading around the table above.
The Speedmaster wasn’t even built for space originally — it launched back in 1957 as a motorsport chronograph, just meant for timing laps at the track. Then in the 1960s, apparently NASA went looking for a chronograph tough enough for space missions and ran a bunch of watches through brutal testing — heat, cold, vibration, zero gravity. Most didn’t survive it. The Speedmaster did, and from what I’ve read it ended up as the first watch worn on the Moon during Apollo 11 — Buzz Aldrin had his on the surface, while Neil Armstrong’s stayed in the lunar module as backup.
Kind of a fun thing to know is on your wrist every time you wind it.
The Reference Number Rabbit Hole (145.022 vs 3570.50)
While I was figuring out my own watch’s details, I kept running into a naming mess I didn’t expect: most listings and forum threads throw around “145.022,” but my watch is stamped 3570.50. Turns out these aren’t competing models — they’re basically the same case at different points in Omega’s own naming history.
Here’s what I pieced together: Omega gave the Speedmaster Professional case the reference 145.022 back in 1968, and kept making essentially the same case, with only minor updates, for about 20 years. Along the way the number itself changed a couple of times just from bureaucratic reference-system updates — 145.022 became 145.0022 in the early ’80s. Then in 1988 Omega switched to a whole new naming system (called PIC), and the same watch became the 3590.50. In 1996 that became the 3570.50 — the version I have — which is also when Omega swapped in the Caliber 1861 and switched the lume from tritium to Luminova.
So “145.022” isn’t wrong exactly, it’s more like a nickname that stuck around from the case’s original name, even for watches technically sold under later reference numbers. That’s apparently a big part of why Speedmaster listings can look confusing at first glance — the case has barely changed in almost 60 years, but the reference number on paper has changed several times.
While I was down this hole, I also came across a claim that collectors lean on the 145.xxx references specifically because they mark real case/movement generations, not just naming updates. That part checks out, though one date needed fixing when I looked closer:

So it’s not that 145.022 ran into the late ’90s as a name — it’s that the case underneath it did, just wearing three different numbers along the way.
My 50th Birthday Watch: The Speedmaster That Wasn’t Plan A
This wasn’t actually my first choice.
I’d had my eye on a Rolex Submariner. Like a lot of people, Several months before my birthday, I went the authorized dealer route, I even got my first Rolex Datejust purchase from the dealer, you can check video about that experience. I then played the waiting game for the Submariner, and never got the call. At some point I decided I wasn’t going to let the milestone pass just waiting on an allocation that might never come.
So I went with something I could actually get — and looking back, it feels more fitting anyway: an Omega Speedmaster Professional, reference 3570.50, running the Caliber 1861. A watch on my grail list and it just so happens it showed up at the right time.
Funny bit of timing looking back on it now: earlier this year I’d gotten my wife the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch “Mission to Saturn” for her birthday — the beige one with the brown tachymeter bezel and Saturn’s rings actually pictured on the seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, one of the few MoonSwatch colorways with a literal image of its planet on the dial. I didn’t plan it this way at all, but between her getting a MoonSwatch and me eventually landing the real Moonwatch for my 50th, we ended up with a genuinely fitting pair without even trying — same case shape and Speedmaster DNA, just one running on Bioceramic and quartz and the other on steel and 60-year-old mechanical lineage. Neither of us set out to “match.” It just happened.
Arrival & First Impressions
It wasn’t quite perfect out of the box — it did come as a full set, with box and papers, which I was glad about. The box itself, though, is the old red one, and it’s flaking pretty badly. Turns out that’s less “my watch has a problem” and more “this is just what these boxes do” — apparently it’s such a well-known issue among collectors it has its own nickname, “Red Omega Mars Dust Syndrome.” One forum thread reckoned somewhere around 80% of these red boxes show some degree of flaking eventually, regardless of how carefully they’ve been stored. Ironically, it’s apparently even used as a rough authenticity check, since fakes tend not to disintegrate the same way.

The listing photos hadn’t made it obvious, but the bracelet had been refinished at some point — not over-polished to the point of losing its shape, but the original brushed finish on the outer links and clasp had been swapped for a more uniform, shiny look. That took away some of the brushed-vs-polished contrast you’d expect on a tool watch.

The case, though, looked untouched — sharp lines, finishing intact, clearly hadn’t been through whatever the bracelet went through.

First Clean & Inspection
Being the watch guy I am, I couldn’t just leave it alone. First order of business was resizing the bracelet to fit my wrist — easy enough with the right tools, and it’s a small thing but it made a real difference in how the watch actually sat and felt once it was on.


Then I ran it through an ultrasonic bath to get rid of years of built-up grime from storage and handling — always a little satisfying watching the water go cloudy and knowing it’s actually pulling grime out of the links rather than just wiping the surface. After that I opened the case back to look at the movement — there’s something satisfying about watching one run properly under decent light. While I was in there I greased the case gasket and closed it back up, and gave the crystal a gentle polish just to bring the clarity back without overdoing it.


While I had the case open, I got curious enough to look up the actual movement specs, since “it’s a manual-wind chronograph” was about the extent of what I knew going in. Mine runs on the Caliber 1861 — Omega’s long-serving hand-wound movement, based on the old Lemania 1873, that powered the Moonwatch from 1996 all the way to 2021. A few numbers that stood out to me:
- Beat rate: 21,600 vph (3Hz)
- Jewels: 18
- Power reserve: 48 hours
- Parts count: 234 components
- Finish: rhodium-plated

No date, no hacking seconds — you just wind it, set it, and let it run. There’s something almost old-fashioned about that compared to a lot of modern movements, and honestly it fits the watch’s whole vibe.
Small stuff, but the watch already felt more “alive” afterward.
The Bracelet Problem
My first instinct was to try restoring the bracelet finish myself. The more I looked at it, though, the more I realized getting an even, consistent brushed finish back across all those links is outside what I can currently do. So this one’s going to a professional — filing that under “things I’m not ready for yet.” Brought to an authorised Omega repair shop and got the bracelet polished back to the original condition and the results were perfect.

Wearing Experience

This is the biggest watch I own, lug-to-lug, and on my wrist it leans chunky. I actually looked up the specs afterward to understand why it felt the way it did: the classic Moonwatch Professional case is 42mm across, but the number that actually matters for fit is the lug-to-lug, which sits around 47.5–48mm depending on the reference. Thickness runs roughly 13.2mm on the sapphire-back versions up to about 14mm on hesalite ones, with a 20mm lug width.
Turns out lug-to-lug is the real culprit here, not the diameter. My wrist is 6.25 inches, and 48mm is genuinely on the long side for that — so it’s not just in my head that this watch was clearly designed with bigger wrists in mind. More on how that actually plays out below.

Funny comparison point: my wife’s MoonSwatch Mission to Saturn has almost the identical footprint — 42mm diameter, 47.2mm lug-to-lug, basically the same as mine — and it wears completely fine on my wrist when I try it on. Same case shape, same lug-to-lug, and yet a totally different experience. The difference isn’t the size at all, it’s the weight — the MoonSwatch comes in around 29 grams thanks to the Bioceramic case, while mine is well over 100 grams in steel. Good reminder that “how big a watch wears” isn’t just a footprint question — mass matters just as much, maybe more.
There’s something grounding about winding it every morning, though — a small ritual an automatic just doesn’t give you.
What I Like
- The dial layout is genuinely easy to read at a glance
- The hesalite crystal keeps the vintage feel intact
- The bracelet wears better than I expected for this design lineage
- It feels historically “anchored” in a way most modern watches don’t
- The Moonwatch story is still there in the back of my mind, even when I’m not actively thinking about it
What I Don’t Like (Being Honest)
No watch is perfect — and for me it comes down to fit, though it’s not as simple as “it’s too big.” With a coat or sweater on, it actually wears great; the bulkier sleeve balances it out and it looks right at home. It’s really just with a t-shirt that the mismatch shows — my wrist-to-watch proportion is right there for anyone to see, no hiding it. At 6.25 inches, the 48mm lug-to-lug hangs a little past the edge, and that’s a case-geometry thing no strap swap is going to fix.
Honestly, though, I’m choosing to take it as a bit of a nudge rather than a complaint — if wanting to wear this watch in a t-shirt means changing my diet a bit and bulk up in the gym, I’ll take the win.
