Movement — ETA Caliber 2640 (17 Jewels)

This watch is powered by the ETA Caliber 2640, a 17 jewel Swiss manual, wind movement. Identifying this movement took a bit of digging on my part, as the ETA 2640 isn’t one of the heavily documented or widely discussed calibers you’ll often see referenced in forums or mainstream vintage watch guides.

From my research, the ETA 2640 appears to be part of ETA’s smaller, hand-wound movement families, produced primarily during the 1960s–1970s. These movements were commonly used by reputable Swiss brands (including Edox) for compact, clean, no-date watches. Because of their size and simplicity, they flew a bit under the radar compared to larger or automatic ETA calibers.

What stood out to me while researching the 2640:

  • 17 jewels, indicating a fully jeweled, quality Swiss movement
  • Manual wind, with a straightforward and robust architecture
  • Designed for reliability and ease of servicing, not complexity
  • Still supported today by parts suppliers, which is a big plus for vintage ownership

Although there isn’t an abundance of modern write-ups on the ETA 2640, multiple movement databases and parts suppliers confirm its specifications and legitimacy.

Uncovering the identity of this movement was part of the fun and learning journey of collecting vintage watches — understanding what’s inside matters just as much as how the watch looks on the wrist.

For this watch, my restoration approach was intentionally conservative. On arrival, the watch was already running, which played a big part in my decision-making.

I limited my work to surface cleaning and dial cleaning only. I did not disassemble or service the movement. Through experience, I’ve learned that small vintage movements — especially ladies or compact calibers like the ETA 2640 — are significantly more challenging to service due to their tiny tolerances and delicate components. At my current skill level, attempting a full service would have introduced unnecessary risk.

Rather than force a service beyond my comfort zone, I chose to respect the watch’s condition and leave the movement untouched. This reflects an important part of my learning journey in vintage watch restoration: knowing when not to intervene is just as important as knowing how to.

The watch will therefore be sold as-is, running at time of listing, with full transparency about the work performed.

Summary

This vintage Edox, powered by the ETA 2640 (17 jewels), represents the kind of watch I enjoy learning from — understated, mechanically sound, and slightly under-documented. From identifying the movement, to deciding how far to take the restoration, this piece reflects a practical, experience-driven approach to vintage collecting.
